Music obviously does not provide the same evolutionary benefits and does not affect the survival of humans as a species.
Despite this, when listening to music, our brain releases the same dopamine. The release of dopamine is strongest when a piece of music reaches a peak of emotion and the listener experiences a chill a tingling sensation in the spine. Thats why we feel happier when we listen to our favorite music. Another important aspect is our predisposition to look for patterns in everything. Recognizing patterns is an important survival skill. Does rustling trees mean a dangerous animal is about to attack? Does the smell of smoke mean I should run because theres fire in my path? Music is also a pattern.
